Using a Bowie knife, Johnny pops the lock on the side door.

“Johnny, we’re gonna get caught.” My back’s to his, to keep a lookout. I shiver, rubbing my ice-cold hands together. It’s too chilly outside to be doing this. These threadbare jeans aren’t good in this kind of weather. What was he thinking coming here?

“Nobody is gonna care, Rosie. We’re just havin’ a little fun.”

“My foster parents will kill me if we get caught,” I hiss.

Johnny chuckles. “We ain’t gettin’ caught.” A strong arm wraps around my waist, and he drags me backwards into the musty old house before spinning me around.

I gasp a noiseless breath, gaping at the dining space still full of furniture and decor, as if this house was forgotten decades ago. Dust mites and cobwebs coat nearly every surface. The windows flanking the tall, ornate fireplace across the room have cracked down the center. “It’s beautiful,” I whisper in awe, not wanting to disturb the peace in such a special place.

Both of his arms snuggle around my middle as Johnny kisses the crook of my neck. “Not as beautiful as you,” he mutters, dragging his bottom lip across my sensitive skin. I suppress a shiver that has nothing to do with the cold. “Maybe one day we can buy a home like this, only better,” he says.

“That would be amazing.”
